Anne Canham - Chair DrugFAM

I agreed to become Chair of DrugFAM having read an early draft of Elizabeth Burton-Phillips’ book, ‘Mum can you lend me twenty quid’. Elizabeth had taught both my daughters and because of her professionalism and positive outlook on life I was totally unaware of the nightmare she was living through at that time.

Sadly her story is not unique and having glimpsed the heartbreak that drug and alcohol can bring to families and friends of addicts was only too pleased to work to help establish a charity that offers support and help to people who find themselves in this situation with, so often, nowhere to turn. In the short time that DrugFAM has been established I have witnessed the horror stories of many affected by having a loved one who is an addict and developed a much greater empathy with the devastation of addiction as well as the feelings of guilt and stigma that are often felt. I have seen first hand the importance of having somewhere and someone to turn to and am passionate about the importance of the work that we are doing.

The role of the Trustees is to ensure the governance of the charity and its effective and efficient operation so that the support group leaders and counsellors can focus on our clients. Having spent most of my working life as a senior executive in a large multi national company I hope that I bring the relevant skills to lead the Trustees to do this.
