Simon Mills
I am Elizabeth Burton-Phillips's son, a recovering heroin addict and the identical twin brother of the late Nicholas Mills. In 2004 after the tragic death of my brother, my mum wrote a book about her life as the mother of heroin addicted twin sons. As you can imagine, we had to work very closely together to be able to fully reveal the absolute truth about how our addiction both affected and destroyed not only our family, but our friendships and everything we once held dear. Mum's book 'Mum can you lend me twenty quid? what drugs did to my family' was published in 2007.
During the process of writing the book mum and I felt it was also important to do something positive in memory of my brother to help support families struggling to cope with the nightmare of addiction and in 2006 she founded The Nicholas Mills Foundation now known as DrugFAM.
Mum has a very hard working and dedicated team of trustees who have backed her vision for supporting families and carers whose lives are devastated by drug and alcohol addiction. I know only too well the damage it causes. For me, DrugFAM means that something positive and genuinely good has come from my brother's death.
Today, in recovery I am privileged to be a part of DrugFAM and, as an IT professional, I am pleased to offer practical support to the charity when it is needed.
