TESTIMONIAL FOR ELIZABETH BURTON-PHILLIPS From The Rt Hon Theresa May MP
When Elizabeth Burton-Phillips first contacted me to discuss drugs policy I little guessed what emotional turmoil and family tragedy lay behind her request. I arranged to visit her at home and was simply not prepared for the anguish I would feel at hearing of the story of her twin sons 'drug addiction, apparent rehabilitation and then the tragic death of one of them at the hand of drink and drugs. It was difficult to keep the tears from flowing, such was the emotional strength of her story.
This book tells that story, a story which must be heard if others are not to go through the anguish felt by Elizabeth and her family. It is a tribute to Elizabeth's strength of character and to the deep bonds that unite her family that she has sought not to hide what happened but to use it as a means of helping others.
I have heard her story and I have seen the impact it has on others. Above all else this is the story of an ordinary family caught up in a world they never thought would affect them. It shows that parental instincts to help are not always the right thing to do and it aims to provide others with the knowledge and understanding they need to meet the challenge of drugs within their family.
Elizabeth now speaks around the country on her experience and I know from seeing it at first hand that her speech's move her audience and capture their imagination in ways which can never be done by "experts".
Elizabeth's courage in speaking out is moving. Her ability to move others is impressive. Her commitment to helping other families avoid the tragedy that touched her family is inspirational.
This is a story that needs to be told and needs to be heard. Thank you Elizabeth for having the courage to channel the pain you felt for the good of others.
